2025 Supporter Survey results

At the start of 2025, over 1,200 supporters responded to our annual survey, reflecting on our activities in 2024 and sharing their thoughts on what we should prioritise in the year ahead.

Our annual supporter survey is always an invaluable chance to get feedback from our wonderful community - and 2025 was the tenth anniversary of running it! It couldn’t have come at a more perfect time, as we’re planning new programme strategies for 2025-28, reflecting on the new political context in the UK, and welcoming our new Co-Executive Director Sara Hall in April. It really is such an excellent opportunity to take on board your views to shape our work into 2025 and beyond. So, to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts: thank you, we couldn’t do this work without you!

To kick off, we asked how long people have been supporting Positive Money. It was great to see a range of experience - to the almost half (49%) of respondents who’ve joined us in the last 2 years, welcome! And to those of you who’ve followed our work for longer (including the faithful 7.4% who’ve been with us since we started in 2010!), thank you for many years of dedicated support.

Our next question wanted to find out how supporters engaged with our work last year.

It’s encouraging to see most respondents reading our emails - they’re our best tool for sharing updates and chances to take action together - if you haven’t yet sign-up to our mailing list here. Hundreds also took action online, representing the thousands of people who signed our petitions in 2024, like #TaxTheBanks, or checked out our blogs. We’re especially grateful to everyone who talked about Positive Money to your friends and family, shared our content on social media or contacted your MP about us. In the face of a difficult mainstream media landscape and ever-changing social media algorithms, getting the word out in this grassroots way is what truly makes us a movement.

We asked supporters which of our activities in 2024 they were aware of, to see how well we’ve doing at making our work more visible.

Our #TaxTheBanks petitions aimed at Chancellors Jeremy Hunt and Rachel Reeves and our general election campaign to #BreakTheLink with Big Finance were the three large-scale actions we called on our community to get involved with, so it’s great to see how many knew about them. Up there with these was our joint letter with over 50 economists to reinstate the Bank of England’s climate remit - also our most high profile win of 2024 - getting a commitment from the Labour Party which they followed through on in November.

Fewer people were aware of some of our reports, like Inflation as an Ecological Phenomenon and the 2024 edition of our Green Central Banking Scorecard- so we’ll be  sure to shout more about our publications in 2025.

Looking ahead to this year, we asked respondents which of Positive Money’s key work areas they were most interested in.

On top were Green Finance and Finance and Democracy. Rethinking our financial systems to support a greener future and challenging the power of big banks are core goals of Positive Money’s work, so it’s great to see these issues still resonate with so many. We’ll continue pushing on these in 2025, with future publications on greening the Bank of England’s collateral framework on the cards, and two public facing events on funding a just green transition in Manchester and Bristol next month!

Given the election and new Labour government in 2024 we also asked respondents what they’d like to see us. The most common themes were around holding the government to account and encouraging them to be bolder, whether that be through providing advice, meeting MPs, or using evidence to try to persuade them to pursue our policy goals, which we’ll certainly aim to do. Many of you also emphasised that we retain our educational focus to debunk common economic myths that keep popping up - like the fiscal black hole, Treasury brain, and the household budget analogy - keep an eye out for more social media content!

Speaking of which, we asked which social media platforms people use to make sure we’re reaching as many of you as possible.

Facebook is our biggest platform and a great place to stay in touch, while the relatively high proportion who don’t use social media underlines the importance of our emails. As millions made the move to Bluesky last year we set up a new account (follow us here), though we’re still posting on X for the time being. Whichever platform you prefer, if you haven’t already, you can give us a follow on Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok.

Our final question asked people to sum up Positive Money in a sentence. This generated a bunch of kind, thoughtful, and funny answers, here were some of our favourites:

  • “The grit in the oyster of financial change”

  • “A beacon for social justice.”

  • “A little ray of hope.”

  • “Refreshing, educative and an outlook that is much needed right now

  • “The antidote to the confused way politicians think about money.”

  • “Positive Money is shining a light on economic injustice”

  • Good at explaining the shenanigans that go under the name 'economics'”

Many of you expressed gratitude for our work but really - we’re the ones who should be thanking you. Each and every one of you plays a part in our movement to redesign our economic system for social justice and a liveable planet.

Our final set of questions were to track the demographics of respondents. We use this anonymised data to help understand who we’re reaching with our work as part of our goal to grow a wider and more diverse community. As these questions were optional, we want to extend another thanks to everyone who shared some more about themselves, to help build a more equitable and inclusive movement.

We make better decisions when we make them together. Thank you again to everyone who completed our survey to help steer Positive Money’s work in 2025 - and watch this space!
