Launch of Positive Money local group Camden & Islington

On Thursday 29th January at the Abbey Tavern in Kentish Town Road, a Camden and Islington group of the Positive Money organisation was launched.  Most of the people there had come as a result of seeing the film ‘97% Owned’, which is available to view on the Positive Money website.

The back room of the pub was packed with a diverse range of people eager to discuss Positive Money and the current monetary system. Generally the feeling was one of outrage at the way the banks are holding the nation to ransom, increasing poverty and inequality while making fat profits for themselves.

Ben Dyson, founder of the Positive Money organisation, explained how the system of money creation could be reformed to create a fairer Britain, not dependent on debt, and free of banks ‘too big to fail’. Dora Meade, network coordinator, gave an update from the campaign and news from across the network.

It was decided that the group will follow a twin policy of self-education to gain a deeper knowledge of the economics involved in the reform of banking, and to begin a local campaign of public education, using the internet, social media, and contacts through the trade unions and other organisations. The meeting was also urged to draw attention to the issues through creative and original forms of protest.

Camden and Islington looks set to be a successful and vibrant Positive Money local group. If you are nearby and want to get involved – do not hesitate to get in touch!
