Digital euro gets first big vote of support in European Parliament - Positive Money Europe

Strasbourg - Today, the European Parliament gave its first significant vote of support for the digital euro, the proposed form of digital cash that is being worked on by the European Central Bank (ECB).

MEPs voted comprehensively to support two amendments to the European Parliament’s Resolution on the 2025 European Central Bank’s (ECB) Annual Report.

Laura Casonato is Head of Policy at Positive Money Europe, a non-profit organisation that has long been campaigning for the introduction of a digital version of cash.

‘These votes are a big win for the progress of the digital euro. There is now a clear parliamentary majority in favour of an inclusive future form of cash suitable for the world we live in - money in a digital form that is backed by the central bank, making it safe, secure and accessible to all. This support from MEPs means that moving forward the EU can develop a modern payment system that expands EU sovereignty and benefits all people. Moving forward the European Parliament cannot ignore this vote and must take this result into consideration in its ongoing negotiations.’

The amendments called for the parliament to seek a digital euro that acknowledged the need for equal access to payment services for people’s participation in economic life and therefore a new form of digital money should exist for use both online and offline.

The vote also backed the digital euro as a way of strengthening European monetary sovereignty in a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty that is combined with excessive dependence on non-European payment infrastructures.
