Digital euro faces significant parliament vote after major cross party amendments proposed to ECB annual report
BRUSSELS - Today, a significant step was taken towards seeing how the European Parliament might vote on the long awaited digital euro.
Two plenary amendments to the European Parliament’s Resolution on the 2025 European Central Bank’s (ECB) Annual Report were tabled on the digital euro by a cross-party group of 48 MEPs from S&D, EPP, the Greens, the Left, and Renew.
The vote on the ECB annual report is expected on Tuesday and these amendments will serve strongly as an indicator of how the parliament could vote on the introduction of the digital euro, which is expected in May.
Laura Casonato is Head of Policy at Positive Money Europe, a non-profit organisation that has long been campaigning for the introduction of a digital version of cash.
‘These proposed amendments are an exciting plenary test for the digital euro and reiterate our longstanding campaign that equal access to payment services is essential for people’s participation in economic life. At the same time, these MEPs are rightly calling for the parliament to recognise that universal access to payment in the form of the digital euro needs to work both online and offline. We need a digital form of cash that is safe, secure and accessible to everyone both online and offline.’
