This week we’ve grown the team by 50% – now there’s six of us! Fran and Miriam are both dedicated to social justice and sustainability of our environment and enthusiastic about making changes to our broken monetary system. They’re already bringing new fresh energy, ideas and lots of experiences to our campaign for a socially useful monetary system. We are extremely pleased to introduce them to you:
1) New Forces in the Positive Money campaign:
Campaign Director: Miriam Morris
Hello, I’m Miriam, and I feel very pleased and privileged to be working for Positive Money. I have over twenty years’ experience in marketing and communications for the urban regeneration and housing sectors, and also in children’s services. I have seen the immensely positive impact of intervention in communities, and in individual children’s lives, however, the interventions are just that – interventions in a system that seems to be disproportionately harsh on those who are born less well-off or disadvantaged in some way. When I revisited my previous interest in economics, and in particular the monetary system, I came to the conclusion that it was specifically the monetary system that was the root cause of many of the intractable problems I had been working on. I loved the idea that you could change the monetary system and create a ‘level playing field’. That it was possible to have a system that wasn’t so wasteful; that could harness the unique potential of everyone. Once this idea entered my head, I decided that I wanted to work to change the monetary system.
Campaign Manager: Fran Boait
Hi, I’m Fran and I have just joined Positive Money as their Campaigns and Operations Manager. I became interested in economics and money creation after realising that the environmental and global poverty crises we face could not easily be fixed without re-thinking how the current economic system works, and how to redesign it. I come from a science background, and studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, spending a lot of my free time involved with environmental campaigning. After a short time in Tanzania where I volunteered at an orphanage, I returned to Cambridge to undertake a PhD Earth Sciences, my topic was Carbon Capture and Storage. I have also completed internships at the UN in New York and Greenpeace in London. After attending the Positive Money speaker training in April I delivered three talks in Edinburgh and now I am excited to be joining the team!
2) Welsh Assembly’s Cross-Party Group on Monetary Reform
On Tuesday 13th November we hosted the inaugural meeting of the Welsh Assembly’s Cross-Party Group on Monetary Reform. It was attended by 7 Assembly Members and numerous researchers, interns and a few members of the public. Ben Dyson explained why the common understanding of the financial situation facing local and national governments is flawed, and why, although it’s been a struggle to find £2 billion to rebuild schools, it was no struggle for banks to create up to £4 billion a week in order to fund mortgages and personal loans.
